The Magic of Mbira

Discover the soulful magic of this centuries old sacred instrument! The Mbira Dzavadzimu ("mbira of the ancestral spirits") of Zimbabwe's Shona people consists of 22 metal keys mounted on a wooden soundboard. The keys are plucked by the player's two thumbs and right forefinger to create swirling, interlocking rhythmic and melodic lines. Sometimes referred to as "kalimba" or "thumb piano", the mbira has been used for over 1,000 years at religious ceremonies, royal courts, social occasions and healing ceremonies. Over the course of the class we'll explore the 'culture' of mbira and learn songs and variations from the centuries-old mbira repertoire, as well as some singing to go along with them.

South African Gumboot Dancing

Gumboot dancing originated in the mine compounds of apartheid South Africa, where workers made music with the only things available to them: their voices, hands, and rubber gumboots! This dynamic and powerful dance style consists of rhythmic slaps, claps, stomping and singing. Way fun, a great workout, and perfect for the Wet Coast!
